Design for a Little folk’s hobbit cabin

Just drew this up for the consideration of my grandson (nearly 2) and his mum and dad. Look about right for the woods at the bottom of the garden? Interior simple with wooden table and chairs, and a little mattress for naps (well he must sleep sometimes?!) Insulated. flywire on window for summer. door glazed or lower half half paneled.Brass doorknob in the exact middle, of course, but with a latch to the left.

Also for anyone out there who wants real Middle Earth architecture for their child’s first home away from home. Tree carvings and brickwork can be done to your taste – all in ferrocement. Colours from stained iron oxide (the rusty brown) to painted any colour the Gaffer approves… email me, etc peter@eutopia.co.nz .

Hobbithaven now on Facebook

I prefer WordPress and the blog, but for the billion or so who don’t… you can now like Hobbithaven on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hobbit-cabins-and-Elven-Architecture/363445557191066 and see all the new posts from this blog which will automatically appear on the Facebook page. Follow us there or here – it’s the same content post by post –  only difference is this blog will soon have more pages with special interest topics – and of course it’s elegant WordPress! Either way, like hobbithaven, follow hobbithaven, and spread the word that Middle Earth is in New Zealand in little cabins and hobbitholes popping up (or down) in back yards, lifestyle paradises and woods all over this green land – I hope!

The Dove of Kaiwaka bearing a message

Well it was a big wall to make for two dogs who didn’t get on and one fashion designer who didn’t stay on, but, the Bird is cool anyway, she’s there for the long haul, and hopefully she will draw attention to the hobbit constructions… Oval sign still has Jenny’s YBe.co.nz sign until she vacates mid-march. Got hobbithaven.nz linked to the website tonight. Yay! the .nz extension is cleaner than .co.nz.

Gandalf aka wizard of Eutopia turns his hand to construction…

Greetings fellow Hobbit-lovers! This new blog is of a new dream from my heart, to your heart – and your garden or lifestyle haven – Halfling, Dwarvish and Elven architecture, inspired by Tolkien and the ‘tiny homes’ trend sweeping the Big People world of Big Homes.

Here is a selfie of me dreaming in style. The window sashes are sand-cast concrete – rot free and round, as windows should be.

I am already ordered to make grandson Bruno a mini hobbit hole (above ground – or mostly!) in Gisborne as soon as I get down there. (We plan to spend this year in Gisborne to be near Anna as she has grandson number two!)

Meanwhile I’ve just made a little cabin in the woods for me, on our land on the Kaipara, as a retreat and storage place when we rent out the rest – housetruck and leanto etc. I found it healing and restful to labour hard to make this cabin. The only difference from a hobbit cabin is it is (unusually for me!) rectangular. This is cos I had some secondhand slabs of polystyrene to use up… here’s some photos of that, also ferro steps I made, a photo of Bruno on a nice concrete lion in invercargill, and finally on a shelf inside the cabin a model of the real hobbity cabins I plan to make… Oh and the second photo is of the rooftop paddling pool for sun-warmed showers…

Here’s to fantasy made concrete and real on the good Middle Earth of New Zealand! Some of these may become part of the Hobbit Trail through New Zealand as cabins to stay in after visiting Hobbiton…. I hope so! Get in touch if you want one on your piece of Godzone/Middle Earth!

Hello Middle Earth!

This is exciting and tentative in that I need to apply for permissions from middle earth dot com – under way! I plan to make hobbitholes, cabins etc, all in durable, incredibly strong and above all sculptural and curvaceous ferrocement. See www.fantasticferrocement.com for my creations so far – also cafe Eutopia – google images has pages of photos uploaded by enchanted customers..

As a lifelong (60 years!) fan of Tolkien, hut cabin and treehouse builder, not to mention fantasy cafe builder (Cafe Eutopia – see www.eutopia.co.nz) and fantasy writer (Apples of Aeden, Sword of the Fifth Element), it was natural that when I saw the latest Middle Earth Air New Zealand safety video last week I got to thinking: why not go with that flow and specifically build for Hobbits-at-heart – as well as our honorary Elves, Dwarfs and Men of the West of course!

I’ve built a ferrocement gardens for my daughter Anna and now her son, coming up two, is to have a little Hobbit cabin/playhouse in the woods at the bottom of their garden in Gisborne.
